Looking fly, little guy.
Only a couple pages left in this chapter, again my buffer is quickly catching up to me, if I get hung up on production of these last few pages which are quite dialogue heavy, we might skip a week, but let's see how things go! Just a heads up. Thanks for reading! And Happy Mothers Day! Get some DLC and give your Moms a call.

Also, check out the links page and swing by The young Protectors, a nitro webcomic by Alex W. who kindly linked Buying Time and brought in a huge amount of new readers. Give him some love if you haven't already. Also, webcomic artists, my links section is still rather bare, if you want to swap links or have posted mine and are waiting for my slow ass to post yours let me know!

Awesome page! So excited for Vinnie... I just want this to go well for him!
Falconmage 11th May 2014, 2:07 PM edit delete reply
Pink...? Seriously? 0.0
John 11th May 2014, 2:14 PM edit delete reply
Seriously. Have you not seen the colour scheme of the page? :P
Notos 11th May 2014, 7:41 PM edit delete reply
Yes, Pink. Welcome to 80's themed Cyberpunk!
John 11th May 2014, 2:16 PM edit delete reply
I'd like to see him in Black and Gold highlights at some point; I think he'd look awesome!

I'm almost as scared as he is; I hope this is a break for him so he doesn't have to worry so much about financial parity. I know what a strain that can be.
Notos 11th May 2014, 7:42 PM edit delete reply
His original concept design had gold, actually. It might change again at some point.
John 11th May 2014, 9:01 PM edit delete reply
Squeee :)

I can't believe how big a grin that put on my face. I'm just imaging him colour co-ordinated with gold hair. Mmmm. Tight black top with gold banding, Punk-purple pipes on the trousers with black and gold hair.

Oh and an earring! And sunglasses!

Wow, this story really brings out my inner fashion designer. :S
NobodyImportant11 11th May 2014, 2:35 PM edit delete reply
Okay, so my immediate question is: Was he wearing anything other than the suit jacket and leather chaps?
Notos 11th May 2014, 7:43 PM edit delete reply
Originally the joke was written as 'assless chaps and a suit jacket' before I realized chaps are typically assless anyways... So, let your imagination soar, I guess!
BigfootGolem 11th May 2014, 2:41 PM edit delete reply
Hope this isn't going to cost Vinnie an arm and a leg... or his soul.
MortarAndPistol 11th May 2014, 3:50 PM edit delete reply
Things are getting exciting.... also scary. Probably completely off here: Is the "Truly Outrageous" title of the Pink hair coloring a Jem reference? Because she was outrageous. Truly, truly outrageous.

Also some spelling notes: You've got the "e" and "i" in "weird" reversed. Also, you left out the "e" in "something" and "haven't". Additionally, "High School" would be two words.
Notos 11th May 2014, 7:47 PM edit delete reply
It is indeed a Jem reference, and she is indeed Truly, truly outrageous. Thanks for the corrections, fixed.
MortarAndPistol 12th May 2014, 4:59 AM edit delete reply
I finally got a reference! (the most mainstream reference you've ever made, but still.)
wolfskies 14th May 2014, 10:49 PM edit delete reply
I love Jem and the Holograms! I really wish they would bring back the show. A few of the original cast would love to do an updated version.
JadeDragon 15th May 2014, 2:29 AM edit delete reply
According to the theme song, you're still missing a "truly" there. It has to be "Truly, truly, truly outrageous!" ;)

I'm very glad he did. A wonderful webcomic - very sweet story and I love the style. But there again I would love the sytle - I shop in Cyberdog!

Actually, Notos might find them a little interesting, so here's a link http://shop.cyberdog.net/ Who knows, maybe they could be the first corporate sponsor? :D

PS - is it me, or is Benten a bit of a shout-out to Garrus from Mass Effect? ;)

StevenW 11th May 2014, 3:52 PM edit delete reply
Uh. My comment was missing the 'Alex W sent me here' part.
Sanbai 11th May 2014, 6:39 PM edit delete reply
Hey, you think so too? I was REALLY reminded of Garrus when I saw Benten! I wonder if Benten has a FemShep we'll see later in the comic...She'd have to be a policewoman or something! Someone cool and in control...
Notos 11th May 2014, 7:50 PM edit delete reply
Ha, love it. I'll check that place out if I ever need ideas for outfits, totally fits the 80's cyberpunk feel.
I noticed the similarity to Garrus when I had finished designing Benten, but it wasn't the original intention. Though Garrus was mai husbando in Mass Effect.

Another Alex W sendee here. Alex is used to my one word responses, so you get the same treatment. "MORE!!!!!" Not a big fan of the click click click to get thru the comic aspect, but hey...a story this good means I'll click til the damn button breaks. This is just awesome! Love it!

Sport jacket and leather chaps at the DMA's or maybe just the Digies! (Digital Music Awards...just entertaining myself filling in the blanks)

So this Big Gold sounds like quite a character, looking forward to meeting him!

I really like both those names. I'm totally using DMA's if it get's mentioned again. He is a character, I've been anxious to show him since Chapter 2.

Another of Alex W's referents up in here, and absolutely fallen in love with your story here! I seriously gave it an entire read-through last night, and then promptly kicked it back open to give it another go-through today. Totally in love - thanks for sharing your talent and hard work!

Yet another Young Protectors fan here, and I have to say I've never been more pleasantly surprised. This comic has already jumped to a spot on my list usually reserved for comics I've been following for years.

Welcome aboard, pleased to hear you like it!
Midnight Jake 11th May 2014, 6:27 PM edit delete reply
Interesting to see Vinnie's new look though it does have me wondering what his natural hair colour is.

And I've been following Young Protectors from the beginning. And I think it's a lot better than Artifice, which was itself a good story but YP is knocking it out of the park.

Hopefully you'll be able to keep up on your buffer and if not, well I suppose we can wait a week. Can't wait to see what happens next
Notos 11th May 2014, 8:07 PM edit delete reply
The stubble on the sides of his head say he has boring old brown hair naturally. I've very much been enjoying YP too, the art is so dope, I was really surprised to see the artist comment and link to Buying Time.
Ylixia 11th May 2014, 6:50 PM edit delete reply
Alex over at The Young Protectors namedropped this and I'm so glad he did! THIS IS ALL SO CUTE I'VE BEEN FLAILING THE WHOLE TIME.

Also as someone who's going through a lot of financial struggles, I just connect really deeply to this comic, but not in a depressing way; it helps with the immersion!

Anyway i'm babbling this is fabulous and I'm really glad to have found it :)

Hi there, financial straights is certainly relatable. Hell, before my current job I was freelance for a few years, barely knowing how much I'd make each month. Anyways welcome aboard!
bronakopdin 11th May 2014, 7:05 PM edit delete reply
even though I agree that the pink hair and tie make a nice match... I wonder why he feels obligded to wear a suit!
Not that I mind that! In fact I've got a suit and uniform fetish <3 I just wonder, it doesn't really fit wit their music right? xD

Though it makes a nice contrast which is also nice!

Keep up the good work :D
and as I'm telling each and every artist: never mind short breaks! Real fans can wait and prefer quality over quantity :)
Notos 11th May 2014, 8:12 PM edit delete reply
Interesting you mention it, they most certainly don't need to dress up, given the genre of music they produce, but can't help but feel they have to because of being low-level folks, they probably feel out of their league and want to make a good impression. I touch on it a bit more on the next page :)
bronakopdin 14th May 2014, 1:30 PM edit delete reply
in an afterthought I remembered some other RL artists suddenly going for suits which was surprising yet had quite an effect, so this might as well be a nice statement :D

I wish he had more confidence... but he wouldn't be the adorable Vinnie we've come to love if he did, I guess. Still, NO NEED TO SUIT UP, BOY! Just be yourself, yourself is pretty awesome as is.

Btw, Notos, once a week updates and even hiatuses are fine. This seems like a lot of work for one person and I'm surprised you manage to update every week as it is! I imagine some breaks here and there to catch up are necessary. But I'm sure you have faithful readers who don't mind and now you got a few more :D
Good things are worth waiting for. Cheers!

Notos 12th May 2014, 1:51 AM edit delete reply
Hey, thanks. Glad you dig the medium, and the idea spawned just from what you mentioned, between a cartoon and a comic; I originally wanted to do an animated short, but felt there was a lot more the explore than a couple minutes of animation could, but also felt intimidated by doing a long running coming. I guess I came out with more of the latter than anything, but there you have it!
bobbyjoeguy 12th May 2014, 1:15 AM edit delete reply
to the tune of the Jem theme song: "Viii-nie's truly outrageous, truly truly truly outrageous. oh oh oh his music's contagious, outrageous. Vinnie's his name, no one else is the same. Vinnie's his name! Vinnie!" Lame I know, but I couldn't resist...

Another Young Protectors/Alex fan ... wow, your comic is pretty amazing. I was skeptical for about one page re. the interface, but nope, it's very cool (and wow, so much in a single update!). The story is great, Vinnie and Galvin are such a cute couple, love how off-the-beaten-track they are, LOVE the cyberpunk world you invented and the whole DLC thing (and the synth stuff...yay Fridge, love his character), uh...gaaaaaah just really loving it, ran out of words to explain why. ;-) Great job!

Sybarite 12th May 2014, 4:41 AM edit delete reply
and now I am sad. :( This is a very well done comic, and the first animated web comic I've read where the animations helped to drive the story line rather than just show off the author's skills. Great job! I also have to compliment you on your judicious use of T&A (C&A?). It is handled tastefully, and works well with the story and the world it illustrates. Bookmarked!
Notos 12th May 2014, 1:21 PM edit delete reply

Sybarite 12th May 2014, 4:44 AM edit delete reply
Huh.. so I thought the "title" slot would give my post a title. Anywho, what it was supposed to say is "I just read through the archives"...

And "Young Protectors" is cool, but I honestly like "Buying Time" better. Although I hope you get to (or surpass!) the same level of success and politly rabid fandom that Alex has reached!
John 12th May 2014, 3:41 PM edit delete reply
As a member of Alex's politly rabid fandom all I say it

Give it time

This comic is awesome, and I have no doubt will attract a fanbase in proportion to its awesomeness. Which is huge, in case you missed that point.

The comic is good would be the main bullet point to this presentation, y'might say.

Spo 12th May 2014, 6:25 AM edit delete reply
Yeah, I'm one of the newbies as well, and I couldn't help but read through it earlier today and keep coming back to reread some of the pages, too. I don't think you have to worry about people getting bored, your characters are wriggly little worms burrowed deep in my cardiac muscle. I hope Vinnie gets that video call into Galvin before the meeting. Feel like everything's been going really rather well for such a normal guy; his music's taking off, he's got the guy he'd been doe-eyeing over (although I know "got" is a pretty strong term for their rather new relationship). I'm just kinda worried (though not in a really bad way) that everything's about to go to hell in a handbasket.

But also wanted to say thanks for making and uploading such an amazing comic. It's crazy that you do this in your free time for fun and let us all read it on here. The art's just ajkfafds and who could resist this kind of atmospheric well-world-built story, I'm enjoying it a lot, and I love Vinnie and everybody. So thank you!

Afternotes: Galvin's snapshot as Vinnie got out of the hot tub was the best way to reveal all of our hearts weren't going to be stomped on, I loved it so much. There was genuine tension before that last panel.

I really relate to Vinnie's awkwardness. A lot. And to Vinnie in general.

I think I'm gonna miss the blue! Rather feel a cotton candy ensemble would've served him well. But I'm always kind of change resistant, I'm sure I'll be fully on board in no time.
Notos 12th May 2014, 1:27 PM edit delete reply
Thanks for the kind words, glad you're digging the comic! Funny you mention the butt-snapshot, it feels like forever ago I was posting that scene. As far as the hair color change goes, I like to always change up the characters in some way. The easiest is always giving them different clothes. Fridge with his camo-swatch body. Galena with a different, often...'loud' hairstyle. It keeps them fresh in a way, for me atleast, I never get bored drawing them.
Rauron 12th May 2014, 7:53 AM edit delete reply
Oh man. Oh MAN. I've never had to scroll this far down before the "Post a Comment" button; this is great! Congrats on the spike in readership, and I hope they all stick around to enjoy your work!

The matching tie and hair are fantastic. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of the fact that he's so dressed-up, and it seems like all the flattery may have woken Fridge up a bit, heh. Vinnie's gonna need to be sharp, though, to make sure that he doesn't land himself in a toxic contract.
Notos 12th May 2014, 1:29 PM edit delete reply
Yeah the spike in comments in pretty crazy, I need to dedicate time to keep up! But I appreciate everyone's comments, and its good to still see familiar names like yours as well.

Rauron 13th May 2014, 12:53 AM edit delete reply
Please please PLEASE consider setting up a Patreon account. You might actually have enough of a reader base, now, to turn this into a steady source of income. Maybe not on the "this is my full-time job" level of Smooth McGroove or Smarter Every Day, but at the very least enough to give that wiggle room which you need and deserve.

Don't get me wrong; I'm absolutely okay with the breaks you take here and there. You always find fun little things to help fill the gaps, and you've consistently shown real dedication to the comic. I just want to see it bring more for you.

So, yet another YP referral here.

I started reading on Saturday after the newest page for YP was up and I -could not stop.- I'm usually a silent observer with comics, having only commented on one other (Teahouse for the record), but I just felt I needed to congratulate you on such an amazing comic. The effort you put into this, the depth of the characters, the detail of the world, how relateable Vinnie is... just everything is truly outstanding. The fact that you do all of this by yourself as well? I bow down to you. I can't wait to see how things turn out for Vinnie and Fridge after the meeting.

I'm another Alex fan (damn, there is a lot of us out there!) and came tumbling over here at his recommendation. I have to say--I love your style. I was unsure about the animated panels at first, but now I love them and hope it becomes a thing with other comics. It really helps with the flow of the comic! Needless to say, I also (with the rest of the fans) admire the art work, plot, character development, and dedication that goes into this comic. Thanks you, you rock!

P.S. Its so cool that you go in and respond to so many of the comments!
Notos 13th May 2014, 1:16 PM edit delete reply
Thanks for the comment. I try to make an effort to reply to comments, since people take the time to comment in the first place. I point out a lot of the possible downsides of technology and the exploitation of it all in the comic, but accessibility between creators and audiences that it's allowed is one thing I think is pretty great, if I could have so easily dropped a note to comics I loved 20 years ago I think that would have been pretty amazing, so I try not to take that for granted.

Baranchi 13th May 2014, 6:03 AM edit delete reply
I've read through this twice since Alex linked it. This comic has really just struck a chord with me.

The world is interesting, the characters likable, the story sweet, and the format innovative. But this comic is even more than the sum of it's parts.

Sci-fi is really at it's best when it makes you think about the world as it is and as it could be. Since I've read this, I've been thinking about the ways in which the poor are expected to do without things that are seen as luxury but are actually basic human needs, the things our society can change for the better, and the ways it can go terribly wrong. The comic may be set in a distant time and place. But theme of the story, that's happening right here and now.
Notos 13th May 2014, 1:18 PM edit delete reply
Hey there, thanks. I think that's why I dig the cyberpunk genre so much, (outside of the visuals) it shows us a much more different (often more realistic) look at the future. At first the whole concept started as poking fun at videogame trends, microtransactions DLC and all that. But it might not be such a stretch afterall!
Malin 13th May 2014, 9:52 AM edit delete reply

I wandered over here from The Young Protectors... and I just wanted to say AWESOME COMIC!

Slightly disappointed that I now have to wait for new pages! (I ended up reading everything in a few hours last night lol)

I can't spare much for change right now, but I donated 10 bucks =) Awesome work on everything... The way you did the comic is awesome. Keep up the great work!
Notos 14th May 2014, 1:14 PM edit delete reply
Hey welcome aboard, glad you've enjoying it! Hope the waiting game isn't too rough for ya - I usually take breaks in-between chapters to catch up on my buffer, just a heads up, but always try to update with sketches and other goodies in the meantime! And thanks for the donation, that was very nice you of :)

I got to know the comic through Young Protector's but i noticed that http://www.boyinpinkearmuffs.com/lgbt-webcomics/ also linked you :)
The author likes to make a gathering of lgbt comics related in this website, but his comic are also very cute and innocent :)

Wow. I just marathoned this whole thing, and it's amazing! The characters are so fun, and the dystopian setting is properly creepy. I can't wait for more.
Notos 14th May 2014, 1:17 PM edit delete reply
Hi glad to have ya along, marathoning it seems to be the trend with all the folks that came over from Young Protectors. The comic updates on Sundays, just fyi!

I just found this comic and read the entire thing. I love it, I love Vinnie, I just wanna squeeze him he's so cute!

Excellent work :) looking forward to the end of the chapter!

You're not the first to say exactly that, I guess Vinnie is very squeezable.

Here via Alex W.'s recommendation on The Young Protectors. I'm really enjoying the comic, especially the unique presentation. What I love best, though, is Vinnie. He reminds me of me in his social awkwardness and overthinking things. I also really like the way Vinnie and Galvin make an effort to accommodate each other's interests. So adorable! I really hope this is what Vinnie and Fridge think it is. Vinnie deserves to have things go his way.
Notos 14th May 2014, 10:50 PM edit delete reply
I'm pretty socially awkward too so it's easy to write for him!

Hey, Caesy.

I may or may not have binge-read the whole comic. And then I may or may not have wired 25$ because it was so >expletive< amazing!

Yeah, I did. And it was awesome. Aside the gay-romance hook, I found the setting very inspired. Having just left the age bracket where most people I knew were partying or clubbing and not e'ry body got the time and money for that made socialization tax easy to imagine. It's an interesting spin on over-zealous monitoring where the main goal isn't to control or track people, but to tax and advertise.

The city structure and the notes you provided also helped for full immersion. And the tiny touches with click-by-click still shot progression and animation helped make it more personal and fluid (where some comics may run into the awkward panel where the person does or doesn't appear shocked while the thing that shocked them is still being said. Very innovative way to circumvent that problem.)

You also managed to streamline the story in a manner where the characters recite indecipherable jargon and have completely different norms and expectations than your readers, but have everything read in a very easy to process format where we don't head-tilt on the mecho-jargon or music software-jargon anymore than we should. It reads very naturally.

Excited to see more from you!

Notos 15th May 2014, 1:52 PM edit delete reply
hey Cam thanks for the comment, and thanks a lot for your donation as well, that's really kind! Glad you dig the format, it certainly was something new for me to play with, and took some getting used to, the comic is an ever-changing creature as I learn what works and what doesn't. It certainly has a lot of upsides, stuff you'd never be able to do traditionally, but still has it's downsides too. Regardless it's been a joy to work on and I'm glad others are digging it.

Yet another Y.P. referral here - I started reading last night and only managed to stretch it out to last a day, waah! This is the most amazing, beautiful and unique thing I've read in ages! So very exciting!

And we just saw a whole shower scene without showing anything below the waist. Astounding.

(PS. Please maybe think of adding a donation method other than the hated Paypal?)

Hey now, we gotta have our fanservice! Thanks for the kind words about the comic.
I'll try and look into other donation methods, I'm not sure what is out there really, if you had something in mind please let me know and I'll check it out and see how easy it would be for my tech-inept self to set up.

I'll look into it and see what it's all about. My concerns would be I still want BT to be free for everyone, and if they allow rated R content.

Not to nitpick, but can you actually dye your hair in the shower without shall we say... dying hair on parts of your body nature never intended? Like your eyebrows, your eye lashes, your pubes...not that it wouldn't look...interesting, but it might be almost as hilarious as it was when Samantha did it on Sex in the City.
Notos 18th May 2014, 4:42 AM edit delete reply
Vinnie is probably a pro at dying hair by now, he knows what he's doing.

Okay, I didn't let you know in my last comment that I am one of Alex W.'s readers. I am totally new to the web comic scene, and boy am I glad to have learned a bit about you guys! I'm sure there are a ton of other great one's out there, yet I'm happy with what I've learned about so far. Pure luck that I even found out about Alex's, and I'm really happy that I found yours. I love the interactive way the story unfolds, it makes us feel more apart of the story line in a way.
More than anything, just glad to see gay comics out there. Would have loved to know this was an option back in my college days with computer design classes. I would have signed up for all of them if this is what could be done! Who knows, maybe one day I will go back and join the ranks? For now, I will let you all do the work and enjoy the glory! Thanks for the inspiration, just now I'm getting greedy and wanting more, more, and more!

I found you through The Protectors' link and you have a new devotee in me. I love the animation, love the sexy sex scene, and love the authenticity of the characters. I'm completely hooked. Love Fridge. Love the relationship between Galvin and his sis. Love big, sexy Galvin most of all. Wow.

I read a ton of web comics and non like this - I love the animation, the way the story unfolds...it's like 10 days of web comics in just a few panels. Fantastic!

Okay...done gushing now.

Thank you.
