Were you confused by the pastel, and lack of dayglow?

I really NEVER had thought that Galvin was actually like that...

Once again, you astound me, Notos.
Notos 24th Aug 2014, 10:59 PM edit delete reply
Haven't really explored any of Galvin's flaws until here, so guess it makes sense! Also thanks, glad you liked it.
Draginbeard 24th Aug 2014, 1:46 PM edit delete reply
Im guessing this is a recurring dream. Tragic events can be haunting, day and night.
Notos 24th Aug 2014, 10:59 PM edit delete reply
Yes indeed it is.
MortarAndPistol 24th Aug 2014, 1:47 PM edit delete reply
Ooooooh. Dark. Something a bit "Dr. Who" about this page, but maybe that is just me.
Liska 24th Aug 2014, 1:49 PM edit delete reply
Awww, poor Galvin. Now we know a little bit more about what he's going through. I always say to people when they're surprised to see me hurting, that it's always the people that are the strongest- or put on the strongest face- that fall the hardest. Hopefully Vinnie will be there to catch him when he needs it :)
Jaheth 24th Aug 2014, 2:05 PM edit delete reply
So why does the rocket explode...?
Guest 24th Aug 2014, 2:23 PM edit delete reply
I'm guessing his dad was on the ship? Or in some other way caught in the blast.
Froggy711 24th Aug 2014, 3:31 PM edit delete reply
No, it wasn't that. He explains how his father died back in Chapter 3, Page 10.

This is... something new.
MortarAndPistol 24th Aug 2014, 4:48 PM edit delete reply
I'm pretty sure the rocket is a metaphor here. Galvin is dreaming. His father isn't actually there, and he doesn't have answers to his questions himself, therefore, his father can't just answer his questions and it solve everything. So, the dream always ends at the same point, he knows it will end at the same point, therefore the inevitability of that is depicted here as an oncoming wave from an explosion, while Galvin is sitting out in the wilderness, with no one to help him (which is how he feels).

At least, that is how I read it.
Notos 24th Aug 2014, 11:08 PM edit delete reply
Mortar's theory on it is very close to what I was trying to depict, and I'll say this now since I don't see this sequence as an integral part of the story that will unfold over time, but rather a representation of Galvin's feelings of loosing his father and living with a complete lack of closure.
chris-tar 24th Aug 2014, 2:35 PM edit delete reply
Haunting and touching at the same time.
Midnight Jake 24th Aug 2014, 2:37 PM edit delete reply
I take it you didn't read Chapter 3?

But the mysterious rocket and it's following explosion has me wondering, is this is any way related to the impact of the meteor? I'm speculating of course but what if the rocket contained a payload that was meant to destroy the rocket but after something terrible happened, it destroyed the city and then several days later, the meteor itself hit as well.

Gavin to me seems like a history buff-don't know if he ever mentioned that-so perhaps he's remembering this from a documentary or perhaps this is just a scene from one of those awful horror films he loves so much.

Either way, I'm somewhat enjoying the darker tone the comic is taking. Can't wait for next week
Grall 24th Aug 2014, 4:20 PM edit delete reply
I'm pretty sure the disaster that forced everyone underground was way before Galvin's time.
Notos 24th Aug 2014, 11:09 PM edit delete reply
Heh a really interesting theory Jake, though Grall is right here the meteor impact was well before any of the cast were born.
just_saying_hi 24th Aug 2014, 2:56 PM edit delete reply
I met my now-husband two months after his dad passed away - not in an accident, but after some years of increasing illness. For almost a year he talked to me of this man I had never known, alternating between past and present tense, as if he were still alive somewhere inside him.
Notos, I think you did a fantastic job graphically expressing a delicate psychological situation.

Thanks, its nice to be posting new content again too. Now the real crunch time begins.
Jestana 24th Aug 2014, 4:32 PM edit delete reply
Oh, Galvin. This was beautifully sad. I figured there was more than we'd seen so far. We usually only saw him with Vinnie or Mackie or others. I hope he lets Vinnie see this vulnerable, unsure side of him soon. It'll help him to know that Galvin struggles the same as him.
Notos 24th Aug 2014, 11:13 PM edit delete reply
Yeah around mid Chapter 3 I realized there wasn't much of a focus on Galvin yet, though that was partly to do with making him the 'unobtainable object of Vinnie's affection'. Time for some Galvin time, we don't actually see Vin for another couple of pages.
SilverLion80 24th Aug 2014, 4:50 PM edit delete reply
Ouch. It's amazing how it haunts him, but he won't let the tragedy define him. That says a lot about Gal. Keep surprising us.

Talk about coming back with a bang. I have this gut feeling this new chapter's gonna put me through the wringer emotionally.

Notos 25th Aug 2014, 2:17 AM edit delete reply
Things will be a little bit more dramatic this chapter than others, but it'll still have it's fun bits too.

This chapter intends to be ‘wunderbar’, doesn't it?
Don't know if it's only the lighting, but your art looks different (thinner/sketchyer lines?).
Anyway, it's splendid ^_^
Notos 25th Aug 2014, 2:21 AM edit delete reply
Well, the dream sequence is literally the first time the comic has used pastel tones, so maybe that's the difference? Regardless, thanks for the comment!

It is really good to be seeing more to Galvin other than just the confident sweetheart we've seen him as until now. Not that I didn't love the big guy! It just makes him more real.

Plus this touches me a bit on the personal side too. Very well done!
Notos 30th Aug 2014, 2:00 PM edit delete reply
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it Drackir.
Tamiel 30th Aug 2014, 9:49 PM edit delete reply
This is a really touching page. Obviously Galvin loves his dad and his dad loved him. I like that we get to see his uncertainty, since Galvin usually presents so confident. Internal struggle makes him more human and appealing.

On the art side--I like the softer colors. They provide a great contrast to the normal neon look and emphasize that this is something different/dream. I adore the rocket smoke trail. And you did a really nice job on the eye expressions--subtle, but effective. Thank you and keep up the amazing work and story!
