I get the feeling that something is going to happen in sublevel. Something not so good.

Guess we'll see!

Awesome! Knew staying up that little bit longer'd be worth it.

I generally update Sunday around 10:30am-11 Atlantic time, if that helps.
Alt+F7 7th Sep 2014, 10:39 PM edit delete reply
Hmm, thanks. That's only around 1AM, I think it's worth it.

Kinda curious as to why Benten was so silent in the shower. Since his body is fully synthetic does he require a special type of shower that wouldn't rust his body up.

Also that made me wonder, if someone were to kick him in the junk, would that hurt him at all?

One thing that made sense now though is the uniforms. No wonder they look so clingy, the guys aren't wearing any underwear
b3nc0 7th Sep 2014, 4:02 PM edit delete reply
We still didn't get a clear view of it, though…
Is it permanently there, is it strap-on, clip-in, screw-through device?
DraconicSoul 8th Sep 2014, 6:33 AM edit delete reply
scroll back through the pages to the ask fridge leon mcnichols session...and youll see...although i dont think Benket has the same one...
Crispy 7th Sep 2014, 4:47 PM edit delete reply
I would guess that, as a full-synth, he wouldn't sweat so wouldn't need a shower.

Maybe a monthly dip in a light acid-wash with a nice, relaxing lube job after.

And for a synth, that wouldn't be a euphemism. ;-p
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 7:44 PM edit delete reply
Still don't know how reply strings work here, so;

Jake - He wasn't shown mostly because he had no dialogue in the panel, and it would have been another extra body to have to draw, more work on an already heavy page. As for getting kicked in the junk, Full Synths don't have functioning testes, they can opt for falsies for "look's" but usually make 'donations' kept in cold storage before undergoing upgrades/replacement if they want to reproduce. That being said, synth parts are still sensitive/receptive to touch, and are capable of sensitivity moderation, maybe they turn their balls down to zero!

Crispy - Although they don't have sweat glands, their bodies are still get dirty like anyone else, and still have sensitivity feedback, a shower is still rejuvinating. A shower after a sports match might just be force of habit. Phantom shower.
Froggy711 7th Sep 2014, 9:37 PM edit delete reply
Naw. If you notice he puts on a towel, so I am thinking he is taking a shower with the rest of them. Just off screen.
NobodyImportant11 7th Sep 2014, 8:20 PM edit delete reply
By my watch, we've never once seen Galvin wearing underwear in the comic. (Yes, this is the sort of thing I pay a lot of attention to.)
That said, since this is a sci-fi comic, the uniforms are probably designed with futuristic support and protection mechanisms, like really advanced compression shorts.
Notos 8th Sep 2014, 4:09 PM edit delete reply
A few people mentioned this early on, it started as just an oversight, I missed drawing undies on him at one point, but so many people commented on it I guess it evolved into a character trait, Galvin goin commando.
josbell975 11th Sep 2014, 2:37 AM edit delete reply
Nothing wrong with that.
ashrium 7th Sep 2014, 3:17 PM edit delete reply
Uhhh nice fan service :P , well now we know Gogol is the only one in the team with no synth parts and the most spiritual perhaps?. mmm the sub levels that sounds dangerous. I recall that supplement you posted that area had no law authorities :S
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 7:45 PM edit delete reply
Indeed, a man of faith and a Zero Synth.
Invisiblebear 7th Sep 2014, 3:52 PM edit delete reply
Loving all the nudity in this character & Galvin just keeps getting better & better. he's such a sweet heart.

I also agree with Bojo, I get the feeling something is gonna happened, can't tell if it's bad or good. guess we'll have to wait & see.
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 7:48 PM edit delete reply
Thanks glad you dig it, Invis. Something good or bad happening is a pretty safe guess ; ) Wait and see.

b3nc0 14th Sep 2014, 1:40 PM edit delete reply
@Notos I was merely pointing out that you had female audience too & that the straight ones would also consider this page fanservicey…
meep 7th Sep 2014, 4:16 PM edit delete reply
fanservice indeed! LOL :D

and lots of poses, even unartistic me, noticed how many there were.

Nice tease about the next page, expecting something to happen now but curious about a glimpse below.
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 7:51 PM edit delete reply
When I sketched I out I guess I didn't forsee how much time it would take to clean so many poses, a waist-up composition probably would have cut the work in half, but hell what fun is that.
Draginbeard 7th Sep 2014, 4:31 PM edit delete reply
This looked like a tough update, all the conversational posing came off really well.

Trying to stay away from repetitive poses, and use new, but still fitting gestures is a bit of a challenge for me.
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 7:53 PM edit delete reply
Thanks Dragin! I find doing a lot of quick gesture drawings of poses helps a lot, doesn't take up a lot of time and gives you a bunch of options to choose from for the scene.

Ooh la la!! New page, yay! I'm intrigued by the collectivism ceremony. Awesome page as usual, Notos.
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 7:55 PM edit delete reply
I'm hoping to give a brief peek into Collectivism near the end of this chapter, but it depends on how ahead/behind schedule I am when the time comes, since it would kind of just be a little 'side note' filler like the Strikeball game it might not make the cut. We'll see.
josbell975 7th Sep 2014, 5:26 PM edit delete reply
First off, I love you. Every thing I ask for I get and I'll kiss you for that if we ever meet.

Trash talk, high fives and butt-slaps...I should have done sports...RATATATATATA!!! That made me lol! You draw really big sacs btw, not complaining, makes me feel normal lol.

Big guys and little towels. I've seen this a thousand times in RL and you nailed it! Best if you don't ask to much about that ;-). Gogol has thin legs for a big guy, like my BF. and his cute mushroom cap...Not everyone is 8 inches and you kept it very real.

Collectivism Ceremony...I'll have to Google that one. DLC -free zones, my my, what do we have hear. The sewers I imagine. Unlike those nice showers with electronic eye's built into the shower heads. A Hoedown? HAHAHA, reminds me about last night, best not to share that one either.

I'd party like a rock star in the sub-levels! I really like the locker room scenes, and not just for the fan service (Thank you again for that. I knew if I wrote you every day my dreams would come true), but the BG's were amazing. Looks like many locker rooms I've heard about (this fat bitch doesn't work out).

Benten was smaller then I thought. I guess I got it in my head that a full synth would be a standard six foot or something. And no synth cock, some might grumble. But I do love seeing the fronts and backs of synth of all types, and not b/c sometimes it comes w/ nudes. Great work as always!
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 8:02 PM edit delete reply
Your request for Shunsuke made perfect sense, as I've always tried to depict all different types of bodies (in every respect). So glad you are pleased, and thanks for that recommendation and for this comment.

Funny you mention Gogol's shortcomings, I wanted to have a character who opts not to undergo the process of upgrading to the 'perfect body', in a world where it is made very easy and trendy. I suppose Vin fits into that category as well. Still, just putting in a little bit of a flipside from Fridge, who went for the "might as well look like a Greek God" approach.
josbell975 7th Sep 2014, 8:38 PM edit delete reply
This way he doesn't have to buy new clothes, lol. Straights hate to shop!

Hi Notos, I really liked this page; getting to see some more character development in the boys was great, as was all the fanservice ;P
Just want to let you know though that a few typos in Panel 2 caught my eye, in case you want to correct them at a later date.
- guy's instead of guys
- reoccuring instead of recurring
- loosing instead of losing
- our instead of out
Been following the comic for a couple months now, and really enjoying it. Art is awesome as always! Keep up the great work!

I can personally confirm that some straight ladies do enjoy seeing naked male hunks, and even m/m sex. I've been told the same holds true with genders reversed...
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 8:14 PM edit delete reply
I hear ya ;) I was mostly referring to my straight male readers, who are still super cool dudes so they probably don't care ;)

I really love Gogol. I guess I'm a sucker for big sweeties with confidence but not arrogance in their spirituality. Also he's cute.

You truly know how to fanservice, I loved it (even though I had to be very careful, since I was reading this in public!). It's nice that Galvin feels comfortable enough to ask his friends about this kinda thing. I'm actually really excited just to SEE the sub-levels, and the people and culture there, although I know things are about to get rougher. I love that we're making our way around the city, and we get to flesh out the world.

Thank you for the page!
Notos 7th Sep 2014, 8:16 PM edit delete reply
Glad you dig him, I really wanted to fit a man of faith in the story, even as just a side character, as I agree confidence but not arrogance in spirituality is a nice trait.

This comic's plot and execution are so far beyond any other romance comic out there it's insane. It is criminal that this isn't permanently lodged into 'Popular Overall'
Stardust 7th Sep 2014, 9:56 PM edit delete reply
Indeed, crowwinters, if I was a blogger I would without doubt write about it so more people could read it, since i'm not the least i could do was recommending it to my friends. I became aware of Buying time by seeing a post about it on that Gawker's Media blog, iO9, if i'm not wrong, so that kind of thing is important.
Notos 8th Sep 2014, 3:09 AM edit delete reply
Crow - Thanks so much, very glad you are enjoying it. I'm not entirely sure how the 'Popular Now/Overall' categories work, I know I have more subs than some listed on there, who knows!

Stardust - Cheers, glad just to have ya aboard!

Well, I'm used to not getting alot of fanservice. The comics I'm reading that seem to be delivering the most in this direction are yours and Alex Woolfsons. Not alot to enjoy here for a straight guy. But since it doesn't interfere with my reading experience very much, I don't resent it. I just try to be glad for the other readers. And I'm obviously not reading your story because it has gay people, but because I'm intrigued alot by your characters and your setting.

In other media, fanservice seems to involve big boobs alot. Unnaturally big boobs, that is. I don't like (far to) big boobs, and in a certain way, this is alot more annoying to me, than your kind of fanservice.

Anyway, the alots seem to have captured your site, an alot of pride already took your cast page hostage. (=
If you don't know what alots are, I recommend reading this: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.de/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html

Finally I want to say: I don't usually make this many spelling errors and I avoid over-usage of single phrases, e.g. "a lot". But in this case, I made an exception and wrote it many times more than one should. And in the last paragraph I avoided it at all, to illustrate that I can really do without using it much.
Notos 8th Sep 2014, 3:31 AM edit delete reply
Thanks for your comment about fanservice, I generally feel the same way but for the male gender; I don't generally care for over-the-top stuff. I personally appreciate more tasteful scenes of a well developed character than the opposite.

And yes, my spelling needs work, I appreciate when people point out errors. I spent my time drawing in English class.
Niggle 12th Sep 2014, 4:42 PM edit delete reply
I was reading your comment and I kept thinking "why so many alots?!" and then you linked Hyperbole and a Half, perfect. XD

I like the way that you work with fan service, Notos, be the eye candy kind or the world building you always include things where they feel natural, really nice. Btw, may I suggest something? It’s a long time since we saw that page detailing the levels and the outside world, it would be nice to have it somewhere else in the next pages or even permanently fixed on the links up there.
Notos 8th Sep 2014, 3:15 AM edit delete reply
Thanks Stardust glad you think so! Good suggestion about the Levels supplement being more available, I'll see about putting it in the FAQ section on my next update, I might throw the DLC one in there too.
Kbob 8th Sep 2014, 4:00 AM edit delete reply
Just to toss in my two cents, I'd also love to have the levels page more accessible, I've had to go hunting for it a couple times myself.
Notos 8th Sep 2014, 4:10 PM edit delete reply
Gotcha Kbob, I'll see what I can do about putting it up on the FAQ page, not sure how comic fury handles SWF's in html but I'll look into it.

Loving this update !! I feel for Galvin, though. I know what it's like to have reoccuring dreams. I have similar ones often, about tornadoes and a few other things that repeat often. The first few times it scared me, and after that I could always tell what was coming up next... it was like a life predictor. Pretty accurate, too. I follow them now, when I have one... it usually ends up being the right thing.
Notos 8th Sep 2014, 3:18 AM edit delete reply
I have recurring dreams as well, certainly nothing like tornadoes though. I dream about wanting to travel a lot, experiencing wanderlust. Wonder what it means!
Liska 8th Sep 2014, 4:51 AM edit delete reply
I get wanderlust a lot too. I used to move every four years or so to a different place because I'd get so restless. Now I'm a small business owner, so I can't ! Drives me nuts. You're probably feeling restless. How often do you have them? I YouTube a lot to help quell the travel craving.

I don't tornado dream often, but when I do I know to heed it. My other dreams too, if I remember it I always pay attention. I love signs of all sorts, it fascinates me

Notos 8th Sep 2014, 4:11 PM edit delete reply
They happen maybe once a month, so not very often, but its probably the only recurring dream I have.
Liska 10th Sep 2014, 2:14 AM edit delete reply
Have you tried going somewhere- even taking a day trip- to see if actually traveling when you get it changes how often you get it? It sounds weird, but I have found it beneficial to follow the dreams if the opportunity arises

So the sublevels... Are there security people that try and stop people from using that loop hole to get around using credits? It seems like "the man" would be upset at people cheating in this way. And yes I just used the phrase,"the man". lol
Notos 8th Sep 2014, 3:26 AM edit delete reply
The sublevels are sort of a non-issue in the grand scheme of the money-making machine that is Hyperion and 'the system'; it's quite a dump, with barely anything to offer in the way of social outlets or amenities, so there isn't much traffic anyways, as it's home to only 5% of the population. I imagine the 'higher ups' that run the system feel the say way about it as Shunsuke does. "You wanna go down there? Gross. Have fun."

I could be horribly wrong, you're story telling isn't always predictable which is what makes this such a fantastic read.

And they're not self-conscious, poor Vinnie would have a heart attack if he had to take his clothes of in front of a bunch of guys.

And damn, Galvin is saying all the right things. That last line... Damn, again. *happy sigh*

You really are building this comic well. Like the others (plus having some knowledge of writing), the sub-levels are perfect timing to introduce some kind of problem for our friends here. Also, as a side note, and I cannot tell you exactly why, but I just did not anticipate Shunsuke having such a large wang. I guess I thought some of his attitude came from little man's syndrome. Anyway. Good job. Your story is great.
Notos 8th Sep 2014, 4:16 PM edit delete reply
I chalk his attitude up to possibly being a skinny bullied nerd in highschool, he tries to compensate now by being a Strikeball superstar, his Synth upgrades are for that purpose only.

I'd still date him.

I did intend to read all the comments, honest I did, but there are so many!

Anyway; I'm intrigued now about the spirituality around in this future. First we've heard of it that I've noticed

Also, Galvins face in the very last panel. So cute! :D
Notos 9th Sep 2014, 12:50 PM edit delete reply
As I mentioned somewhere above I'd like to (time permitting) do a page that looks into it some more, a little 'one-off' like the Strikeball page, but depends on how much of a time crunch I'm in.

I think meeting Vinnie in the sub levels might actually be code for some good old fashioned butt play.
FyoraSilverwolf 9th Sep 2014, 10:01 AM edit delete reply
Interesting Note: I'm told the "losing teeth" dream/nightmare is actually most common in women. I asked my dental hygienist if it was an indication that my teeth were unhealthy or something, and she said that it's really a really common dream for women to have. It's supposed to indicate nervousness about one's appearance/other people's perceptions, and it's really common in women because their teeth/smile are what people first see. Most guys don't really think about that I think. Most guys I know also don't really smile much either.
Notos 9th Sep 2014, 12:53 PM edit delete reply
Ah interesting. I've had the teeth one a few times in my life, but certainly not enough to call it recurring, I don't think.
Guest 12th Sep 2014, 4:52 PM edit delete reply
Lady here, and I think I've had dreams like that about a half dozen times. They're either about a few loose teeth and the worry about losing them, or the ludicrous with all of them falling out at once.

It's interesting about the smiling, I have one of those mouths where my teeth don't show when I smile.

Ah, the locker room, the real reason to get excited for sports scenes. ;)

Loved this update a lot, I like seeing Galvin with his friends. Shunsuke is still my favorite, but he's beginning to teeter from lovable jerk, to just plain jerk. I hope we get to see some other sides of him soon.

I'm so happy the new chapter has started! :D

I bet he's diff in private. I know he's not a main character and I don't want to see this b/c he's MINE! But if he found his true love, someone he felt secure around, that he'd drop that bravado crap and be normal. Over time, that would spread to his time w/ friends too. But again, he's mine!
Aeon Blue 11th Sep 2014, 4:44 PM edit delete reply
Oh, wow. "Straight folks." I guess that as a het woman you never considered me to be a part of your audience. That really sucks. I love this comic because it's so well-written and the format is groundbreaking, but if I don't exist to you then it's not worth continuing to read. I am told I am invisible and don't exist and am not supposed to like sci-fi or games or anything other number of male-coded things enough as it is; I can't afford to reinforce that. And it's not even like this is a gay comic so you figured non-gay people would never read it because you clearly assumed straight men are. It's *just* the women you left out.
josbell975 11th Sep 2014, 6:58 PM edit delete reply
Gurl! You reading to deep in-between the lines! Notos is nothing like that! It's a general statement and it was meant to be funny. Everyone laughed but you, sorry. It is worth the continuing read BECAUSE it is so well-written and groundbreaking format! As a gay man, I've been told far worse in much harsher ways but I aim my anger at the ppl that actually said it, you should too. This has been identified as a gay comic more then once and Notos is aware that he has both men and women reading that are both gay and straight, it's never been an issue before, nor should it be now. Until he actually does what you claim, do yourself a favor and stick around.

Gamer chicks rule and never let anyone tell them otherwise! When I play MMO, I know diff between a female avatar and an actual female gamer. Though rare, the real thing is always a delight and makes the game so much better.

That is not even close to what I was implying Aeon. Chill out.
Aeon Blue 12th Sep 2014, 2:06 AM edit delete reply
I apologize that my reaction was that personal and bombastic. What I should have originally said was, simply, "Please be more considerate with your wording because it falls into this broader context of marginalizing." (In this context, "men are people and women are women.")

I am looking forward to seeing the sub-levels and what kind of counterculture this society has created. Is there a different currency in use? If money is completely digital and tracked even half as much personal time then maybe it isn't much use down there. The government would never allow such a place to exist if it wasn't useful to them. It would be interesting to see what kind of relationship the two worlds have - particularly, what the upper levels are getting from the sub-levels. Even if the comic never has a need to venture into that territory, the fact that it provokes those kinds of questions proves that it's doing what good sci-fi does.
josbell975 12th Sep 2014, 2:19 AM edit delete reply
I have a penis, so I'll never get where your coming from. Same way you'll never experience my problems as a homosexual. What do do have in common is that RL mainstream can and will look at us as second class citizens or less then human. What we do have in common is that we don't take any shit for it and won't stay silent. I applaud you for that! Just as long as it's directed at the correct parties ;-) Like I said gamer chicks rule and are VERY welcome here.

I'll be in the sub-levels b/c I'm low class like that, lol! I bet they use a barter system. Time will tell!
