Hey autonoms, we begin the Chapter 5 winter hiatus. I usually include a rough of the next chapter in these, but I was a bit too busy finalizing the chapter 6 script, it looks like it's going to be a long one. Anyways, I'll have a sneak peek for next week's update I'm sure. The hiatus schedule will come in a few weeks also. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy your weekend!

Hello Notos, thanks for the chapter's roughs!
(this particular scene too)

Make sure to plan some rest time too during the hiatus
(especially if it's a long chapter)

I'll try, gotta keep up with the schedule though!

Wow, his dad expression really changed from rough to clean. Really gives the moment a different feel.
Notos 16th Nov 2014, 10:01 PM edit delete reply
Yeah, the rough was essentially just a placeholder to test the animation effect, didn't put any thought into the expression until the final version.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to respong back on the last page. You got it exactly right. Something where if you needed to do a larger background story for either characters or to lay down some "rules of the land" stuff. Kinda like maybe a series bible, even. Sometimes there's a lot of ground that needs to be convered that can't be conveyed thru art, and if Wonder Woman (Vol2) #8 was any indication, sometimes a text based issue really does well. :) I'm just trying to pry all the info out of you I can. lol. Enjoy hiatus, and see you soon!

I'm certainly not opposed to it, though I'm not a terribly good writer, so a 100% written piece... I dunno how it would turn out. But maybe if I feel the need to tell some backstories or side stories but don't have the time for visual I'll do something like that.

Awesome to see your roughs vs cleans...you're an amazing artist. Can't wait to see more. Enjoy your hiatus :-)

Thanks Twistedfro, hiatus is still going to be very busy but I'll try to enjoy it!

Always like seeing your 'behind-the-scenes' stuff. Happy winter break :)

Thanks justkeepondriving, likewise. Glad you enjoy the roughs!

man, time does go by quick. Buffer goes even faster!

Like the roughs. Much cleaner than my own.

Tell me about it, feels like just a few weeks ago I was starting this chapter, though 2 and half months went by. It's tough keeping up!

Roughs are pretty amazing all on their own. Definitely talent there. :) I can't draw a circle!
Notos 18th Nov 2014, 7:24 PM edit delete reply
To be fair drawing a near-perfect circle is extremely hard.

I still can't believe chapter 5 is over. I've been so swamp with work I barely noticed the good things and now I have to wait again for the next chapter :(
Notos 18th Nov 2014, 7:25 PM edit delete reply
I hear you, it seemed like it went by so far, though it's within the range of other chapters' length. Hope the wait wont be too bad, I wish I could update without any sort of break. I relate to being swamped with work -- we're learning a new program at my studio, it feels like starting from square 1.

I'll just be over here on pins and needles :D

The story goes so quickly, I can't believe we're on a Hiatus again!! Always like to see the sketches, etc. but I want to know what happens next so poor Vinnie isn't left just waiting for an answer.
Notos 18th Nov 2014, 7:28 PM edit delete reply
Yeah someone else mentioned how quickly it moves, I like to keep it snappy and not dwell on any one 'instance' for more than a page, I want each page to be it's own 'event'. Though some, like the date to the sub-levels demand more pages. There will be a few instances like this in the next chapter.
Liska 19th Nov 2014, 2:31 AM edit delete reply
I know it's been a lot longer than it feels (in general, this year is going by SO fast!) and you deserve a break, so don't take my (teasing) whining too personally :D Take time to rest up and recoup... don't burn out!
Chantaru 19th Nov 2014, 2:27 PM edit delete reply
I love the production sketches. I was wondering if you also have rough layouts and thumbnails. I'd be curious to see those too. You're sketches are so clean and close to the finals, I'm a bit embarassed by my own sketches.

Notos 21st Nov 2014, 2:01 PM edit delete reply
Thanks. Do you mean backgrounds? It depends on the location, I use Sketchup as a basis for a lot of backgrounds and work straight into cleans when I do, though sometimes there are locations that you can't really find reference for, things that are more 'organic' like the buildings in the wastelands, which I included in this week's pack. I'll include them whenever I have them.
Chantaru 26th Nov 2014, 1:23 AM edit delete reply
I meant dirty little thumbs to decide what will go where, how many boxes you are putting on a page, that kind of stuff.
Notos 26th Nov 2014, 11:50 PM edit delete reply
Ah I see what you mean. Very few, I don't spend much time with panel layout given the format of BT; I don't have a whole lot of room to go crazy with frame layout. The bulk of the roughs are always poses, and figures placed within/moving throughout a background.
Chantaru 27th Nov 2014, 4:40 PM edit delete reply
Ah, thank you. I would have thought it would have been more important, given the time it takes in traditional illustration.
NorthQuill 17th Dec 2014, 11:17 AM edit delete reply
So, how long have they known each other, by this point? I swear it couldn't have been more than 6 months...
Notos 17th Dec 2014, 1:25 PM edit delete reply
A couple of months, maybe not 6. But again, I imagine the dating 'song and dance' goes much faster in this universe, given the circumstances.
