I shudder to think what her idea of "crazy" is :P
Justym 22nd Feb 2015, 6:58 AM edit delete reply
I was hoping it wouldn't be something terribly awful since a lot's riding on this to work out alright. Though I do keep expecting it to come at some point x.x I SUPPOSE I can just hope for everything to go smoothly, but where's the fun in that?
Arterian 22nd Feb 2015, 7:46 AM edit delete reply
That third panel KILLED me. Them standing there waving at each other from a distance because they cant afford to waste any DLC on interactions so they can save up... this system is SO messed up... dayum.

Glad to know Vinnie's got good friends tho to help him out. Tho what DOES she have in mind? Guess were going to have to wait to find out!
Notos 22nd Feb 2015, 2:58 PM edit delete reply
I wasn't sure how well that panel would read since they are both pretty small in it, and I tend to hate drawing little tiny people in a scene - always feel like I need to add unnecessary detail to them.

Admittedly, it took me a moment to notice Galvin, but as the text boxes drew my eyes to the right he became clear, and the placement of his hand made the situation obvious. Their size does make it somewhat subtle, but I think that actually works for the better here.
DrawingBadly 28th Feb 2015, 8:29 AM edit delete reply
I think It read perfectly, after reading the text I looked at the actual Art work, and I understood it immediately. <3 This is such a wonderful comic, I just discovered it off of a recommendation from a friend and I love it!

Well, welcome aboard, glad you've found us!

Oooh! Can't wait to see what Galena has up her sleeve!

Though I have to admit, a little worried that Vin and Galvin aren't hanging out much while they save up.

Is this the first time we have seen Vinnie doing his job in the workplace?
I didn't even realize he was a welder.
Another great update.
Fantastic art.

No, this isn't the first time we've seen this. There are quite a few examples. Chapter 3, page 7, for instance.
Notos 22nd Feb 2015, 3:00 PM edit delete reply
Thanks! And no this isn't the first time. We've seen him welding before in earlier chapters. Though this may be the first I've actively drawn the welding arc effect.

Time away is ok, as long as its not too long.

Got a bit of a 'Work Montage' vibe from this page. The uniforms brought to mind Ghostbusters, and music from their day-in-the-life montage playing in my head while I was ready this update.

Ive been watching a lot of 80s movies lately, and they loved their Montage scenes!
Notos 22nd Feb 2015, 3:01 PM edit delete reply
Yep, this is definitely a montage, and you are certainly correct about 80's movies. All I need is the upbeat "getting better as you go" song.
bobbyjoeguy 22nd Feb 2015, 7:23 PM edit delete reply
Or,"Taking Care of Business"? lol
Grall 22nd Feb 2015, 1:13 PM edit delete reply
Vinnie and Galvin, separated by a chasm, waving to each other. :(
Well done, sir. Well done.

Thanks Grall!

I really love how you do your perspective shots. they really make the comic seem more realistic.
Notos 22nd Feb 2015, 3:04 PM edit delete reply
Thanks doug, I enjoy doing the backgrounds a lot.
SilverLion 22nd Feb 2015, 5:38 PM edit delete reply
IS HE SERIOUS? 'Don't do anything crazy'. He should KNOW Galena by now. Oh well, he made his bed...
Ttownlittlebear 22nd Feb 2015, 5:51 PM edit delete reply
Have to ask 'cause I don't remember if it been asked before. Is it cheaper to text someone than to talk in person or via vid link?
Notos 23rd Feb 2015, 1:58 AM edit delete reply
Yep, messaging via text is the cheapest as far as DLC goes, as it tends to be most least 'personal'.
Liska 22nd Feb 2015, 6:23 PM edit delete reply
They're so sweet, even apart for a bit! That's love.
sirBloble 23rd Feb 2015, 1:36 AM edit delete reply
He really needs to stop doubting Galena. She's pretty much always on top of things so far.
Notos 23rd Feb 2015, 1:59 AM edit delete reply
Right about that. Though her take-action way of doing things makes him nervous.
crowwinters 23rd Feb 2015, 3:21 AM edit delete reply
God DAMMIT I love the panel of them waving at each other across the way. So perfect.

"When have I ever?" sounds like a presentiment of doom - it's tempting fate! Love the artwork as ever. The scene where they wave to each other is clear and poignant.
pouet 23rd Feb 2015, 1:33 PM edit delete reply
Your art is excellent, especially the lighting. The welding arc and the green outlines are amazing.
Notos 24th Feb 2015, 2:21 PM edit delete reply
Thanks pouet, animating effects is rather fun.
mcsc~~ 25th Feb 2015, 12:58 PM edit delete reply
I'd figured there'd be something like that. Good to know that it might be at a reduced cost. It would make sense, for sure, if it is someone's official or "registered" language.

I did think that the monitoring was much more along vocalization lines, so I wasn't sure if gestures might be a low-level work around. =)
mcsc~~ 26th Feb 2015, 3:27 PM edit delete reply
My reply is misplaced. Not sure how that happened, but I was responding to your response about sign language. ;-P
shadillac 23rd Feb 2015, 3:57 PM edit delete reply
Now that I'm going through my Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training, I'm realizing that they never wear hard hats or respiratory protection! eh, at least I get to see vinnie's cool hair and both of their handsome faces. This is the first comic I check every week for an update. Love it and keep it up!
mcsc~~ 23rd Feb 2015, 9:53 PM edit delete reply
How much might the guys (or anyone) be able to get away without paying DLC if they used sign language or some such to communicate? At least some...
Notos 24th Feb 2015, 2:26 PM edit delete reply
I haven't really touched on this concept much, but I imagine there would be charges for ASL as well, maybe not as high, but as we've seen before Hyperion is essentially under constant surveillance, everywhere, so it most likely wouldn't be a convenient work around or anything.
Twistedfro 24th Feb 2015, 1:53 AM edit delete reply
I've been out of the loop for a little while...nice to come back and catch up. Did I ever mention how much I love this comic? great story plus fantastic art....got me always hungry for more. Love the direction this is going :-)

Welcome back, glad you're still digging it.

Love the panel of them waving to each other across that chasm full of pipes, hee hee, cute!
Yukiness 25th Feb 2015, 12:15 AM edit delete reply
The little wave to each other is about the sweetest thing I have ever seen. Did they blow kisses to each other too?

Man I love this comic and its peeps. Vin is the best and Galena is such a doll. I love how lovable they are against this really tough back-drop of a world. It's great juxtaposition. Thanks for this. Really good stuff.

Thanks as always, Chris!

so is this domestic package thingy their worlds equivalent of getting married? If so how long have vinnie and gaben...garen...gavin(?) been going out, because i didn't know a few months can intensify a relationship like that.
Notos 25th Feb 2015, 1:40 PM edit delete reply
Not technically marriage, it is their world equivalent of becoming 'common law'. Essentially the system makes it such an ordeal to apply to prevent everyone from exploiting the system.
CFT 25th Feb 2015, 1:02 PM edit delete reply
The panel where Vinnie waves at Galvin gave me an idea. They were communicating...visually. Could Vinnie and Galvin learn sign language? It would be hard for those peeping tom cell phones to charge for words that aren't spoken.
Notos 25th Feb 2015, 1:45 PM edit delete reply
Answered a bit above in the comments, using ASL would be generally cheaper than vocal communication but certainly isn't a 'work around'. As mentioned in the chapter 1 supplement essentially every device that requires power is in some way wired into the grid to receive audio or visual (an example of this being in chapter 3 when Galvin's shower "compliments" him). Waving, handshakes, and other brief 'non intimate' interactions such as saying hello, ordering food, or anything under a certain time limit (I believe 25 seconds) get a free pass before DLC kicks in.
ObsidianGamer 27th Feb 2015, 9:16 AM edit delete reply
I like how natural the conversations feel in this comic.

And Galena not doing some thing crazy. Sorry Vinnie you should know better by now.
Notos 27th Feb 2015, 1:29 PM edit delete reply
Thanks Obsidian, glad you think so! I am still extremely new at writing a story.
Andy D 28th Feb 2015, 10:54 PM edit delete reply
Hey, have you looked into a Patreon for this? I would totally back you. I'm broke as a joke but I could kick you a few bucks each month to support such an amazing webcomic.
Notos 1st Mar 2015, 6:09 AM edit delete reply
Hi Andy, I've considered Patreon (and had a number of readers ask about it) but ultimately decided against it for this project. I might look into it (or a similar service) for my next project when Buying Time is finished. Regardless, thanks for the support!
